Superintendents’ Message
Welcome to SAU #53

Serving the school districts of Allenstown, Chichester, Deerfield , Epsom, and Pembroke

Welcome to the SAU #53 website!  Take some time to explore and to learn about SAU #53 and the five districts it serves.  The five districts of Allenstown, Chichester, Deerfield, Epsom, and Pembroke provide the pre-K-12 educational experiences for approximately 3500 students.  Pembroke Academy provides the high school experience for the communities of Allenstown, Chichester, Epsom, and Pembroke, while students in the Deerfield community travel to Concord for their high school program.

Spring is here and soon our schools will be holding end-of-year celebrations and events.  Before we know it, the 2008-2009 school year will come to a close and we will have completed our first year in our current positions.  It is hard to believe that a year has gone by!

Much has taken place over the course of the year and we are excited about the progress made and the positive energy throughout the SAU as we continue to develop as a Professional Learning Community.  We have moved forward with the implementation of our “Action Plan” which focuses on six areas for improvement:  communication, collaboration, curriculum/instruction/assessment, visibility, discipline, and the SAU #53 Central Office.

In the area of communication, we continue to publish a Superintendents’ message on the website, attend various school and community functions, and most recently have used SAKAI to send podcasts to all the faculties and staff throughout the SAU.  Our SAU #53 Leadership Team continues to meet monthly and we have successfully completed “School Walks” in 8 out of 10 buildings with the final two building visits planned for May and June.
We continue to look for new ways to provide opportunities for collaboration.   An SAU-wide Professional Development Day was held at the end of March which allotted time for grade level teachers from across the SAU to meet and share ideas.  SAU-wide book study groups are being conducted providing another mechanisms for teachers to get together to discuss educational topics of interest.

At the forefront of what we do each day is Curriculum/Instruction/Assessment.  Our Literacy/Numeracy Task Force has successfully completed a survey for teachers and one for students will be conducted before the end of the school year.  We will be working with a noted consultant next year who will support our teachers in the area of Numeracy instruction. A survey to evaluate the effectiveness of our current curriculum model is being completed by faculties before the end of April.  The analysis of this data will be part of our SAU #53 Leadership Retreat in August.  We continue the conversation around curriculum mapping and data teams.  We have also had the opportunity to analyze and discuss NECAP data with each of our districts.  We are pleased to announce that all of the schools in Pembroke, Chichester Central School, and Allenstown Elementary School made adequate yearly progress (AYP).

We are proud of the accomplishments in the area of visibility.  We continue to visit at least one school each day, spend time in classrooms, and engage in conversations with faculty and staff.   We truly enjoy the time spent in each building and especially look forward to our many discussions with students.  Seeing teaching and learning “up close and personal” is the highlight of our days.

In the area of discipline, we continue to discuss policies and procedures, in addition to looking for additional ways to keep students safe in environments that focus on learning.  Positive behavior approaches have been explored and will be shared with each district.

Many positive changes have occurred in the SAU #53 Central Office.  We have instituted various new processes and procedures to improve communication with each of our districts and the public.  Utilization of SAKAI, the SAU #53 website, and Alert Now have been instrumental in our success in this area.  We constantly promote our “Open Door” policy and positive work environment for all of our employees.

The entire “Action Plan PowerPoint Presentation” including actions, goals, and strategies can be found as a link on our website.  This “Action Plan” (click here to view*) continues to drive our work and will serve as the foundation for a strategic plan that will include a vision, mission, values, and beliefs.

Technology education and integration continue to be at the forefront of what we do each day.  Recently, a group of teachers and administrators presented our work in “SAKAI” to the entire SAU #53 professional staff and a large group of educators from around the state.  “SAKAI” is a technology rich collaborative learning community which is a fun and exciting place for news, learning, sharing, courses, competencies, and     portfolios.  To learn more about “SAKAI” check out the link from our front page.

We are pleased to report that three of our districts, Chichester, Epsom, and Pembroke successfully passed budgets for the 2009-2010 school year.  Allenstown and Deerfield will be operating under default budgets for the next school year.

On a final note, we would like to welcome all of our newly elected School Board members.  In Deerfield, we are pleased to be joined by Maryann Clark and Gregg Williams.  In Epsom, Joy Tyrrell and David Cummings join the Board.  Fred Kline joins the Pembroke School Board.  We look forward to working with these new members.

We invite you to get to know more about our schools and the achievements throughout our SAU.  Please feel free to e-mail us at pwarburton@sau53.org or gpaludi@sau53.org or stop by our office and visit.  Our doors are always open!
