POLICY STATEMENT

Substitute Professional Staff Employment

Administrative Procedure

I. Selection of Substitutes

The Superintendent’s office will seek qualified substitute teachers through newspaper advertisements, website postings and other means. Those people who substituted the previous year will be asked if they wish to keep their name on the list. A letter will be sent to those people who substituted during the preceding year no later than August 1st. The substitute list will be prepared and distributed to each principal by the Superintendent at the beginning of each academic year and periodically thereafter.

II. Evaluation of Substitutes

The attached form (Appendix A) will be completed by the substitute, the respective teacher, and a school administrator.

III. Duties of Substitutes

The substitute will perform all of the duties that are assigned to the classroom teacher that he/she is replacing. These duties may include playground, lunchroom, detention hall supervision, etc.

The substitute will follow the classroom teacher’s lesson plans.

The Principal will provide information about the daily routine of the school as well as other pertinent information. Teachers requiring a substitute are required to provide appropriate, meaningful and sufficient lesson plans for their term of absence. This requirement may be waived by the principal on a case-by-case basis.
