Internet and Network Policy
The purpose of this Policy is to provide the procedures, rules,
guidelines, and the code of conduct for the use of technology and the Internet.
The definition of information networks is any configuration of hardware
and software, which connects users. An information network includes all of the computer
hardware, operating system software, application software, stored text and data files.
This includes electronic mail, local databases, externally accessed databases, CD-ROM,
recorded magnetic or optical media, clip art, digital images, digitized information, the
Internet, the World Wide Web, communications technologies, and new technologies as they
become available. Stand-alone workstations are also governed by this policy.
Only authorized students and staff may use the School District
information networks, and the networks should not constitute a public forum.
Internet Guidelines: The use of the Internet is a privilege; users
must take personal responsibility for their behavior while on-line. It is expected that
Deerfield School District users will conduct their Internet activities under the following
guidelines:
- All use of school resources to access the Internet must be in support of and consistent
with the educational objectives of the Deerfield School District.
- Transmitting any material in violation of any U.S. or state regulation or school board
policy is prohibited. This includes, but is not limited to, copyrighted material and
threatening or obscene material.
- Hate mail, harassment, discriminatory remarks and other antisocial behaviors are
unacceptable in Internet communication including, but not limited to, copyrighted material
and threatening or obscene material.
- All information accessible via the Internet should be assumed to be private property and
subject to copyright laws.
- Users have a responsibility to respect the privacy and property of other users. Users
shall not intentionally seek information about, obtain copies of, or modify files, data or
passwords of other users.
- For their own safety, users should not reveal any personal information such as addresses
or phone numbers on the Internet.
- Employing the Internet for any commercial purposes not formally approved by the
School Board is prohibited.

- Users should not expect that files stored on district servers will always be private.
School and network administrators may review files and communications to maintain system
integrity and to ensure that the network is being used responsibly. Any right of
privacy which the user may otherwise have to such material hereby is waived. Students and
staff have no rights of privacy with regard to their use of the districts
information networks. The school district reserves the right to record all electronic
addresses to which students and staff send or receive information through the
districts computer networks. The district retains ownership and possessory control
of the district information networks and all information sent, received, created, accessed
or stored thereon. District information network administrators may review computer
files and communications at any time without advance notice to students or staff in
order to maintain system integrity and insure that users are using the system responsibly.
- The supervising teacher/adult has the right to limit access.
- Use of individual accounts is at the discretion of the supervising teacher.
- Users will not download executable programs off the internet without authorization from
the systems administrator.
- Only authorized personnel will have access to/knowledge of necessary passwords.
Computer/Network Guidelines: The use of computer equipment is a
privilege; users should take personal responsibility for their behavior. It is expected
that Deerfield School District users:
- Will protect the privacy of other computer users' areas by not trying to learn their
passwords or copy, change, read, or use another person's files.
- Will not attempt to gain unauthorized access to system programs or computer equipment
and will not use computer systems to disturb or harass other computer users by sending
unwanted mail or by other means.
- Will not disclose password and account name to anyone or attempt to ascertain or use
anyone else's password and account name.
- Will not attempt to log in to the system as a system administrator.
- Will use all computer equipment to meet instructional objectives.
- Will not use the network for financial gain or for any commercial or illegal activity.
- Will not attempt to bypass security systems on computer workstations or servers.
- Will not maliciously attempt to harm or destroy data of another user, or data that
resides anywhere on the Deerfield School District network or on the Internet. This
includes, but is not limited to, the uploading or creation of computer viruses
Personal Security
- Do not give out user names or passwords.
- Do not give out any personal information.
- Never arrange to get together with someone you "meet" on-line.
- Do not respond to any illicit or suspicious activities and immediately report them to a
school district administrator.
Penalty for Violation of Responsibilities
If users violate any part of this policy or engage in any other
activity which school authorities deem inappropriate, they will be subject to disciplinary
action consistent with due process procedures. Discipline could include, but would not be
limited to, the immediate suspension or termination of Internet access and/or computer
privileges.
Rights and Responsibilities of Deerfield School District
The Internet is supplied for use on an "as is, as available"
basis. The Deerfield School District does not imply or expressly warrant that any
information accessed will be valuable or fit for a particular purpose or that the system
will operate error-free. The Deerfield School District is not responsible for the
integrity of information accessed from the Internet. The Deerfield School District will
not be responsible for any liability or expense incurred in connection with use of the
system. Users agree to indemnify the district for any expenses, including legal fees,
arising from use of the system in violation of this agreement.
The District has the responsibility to notify potential users of the
policy through the Student Handbook and posting of the policy at points of access. The
system administrators further reserve the right to immediately terminate the account or
access of a user who misuses the network resources.

I understand that it is a privilege to use school computers and I will
act accordingly.
- I will obey all school rules including those outlined in Computer/Internet policy.
- I will use materials and equipment responsibly.
- I will not send or receive anything over the computer against school rules.
- I will respect the privacy and property of other users.
- I will not tell anyone my real name, address or phone numbers or personal information on
the Internet.
- I will use the programs and equipment only as directed by the teacher.
- I will not waste or take supplies such as paper, printer ribbons, toner, or diskettes
that are provided by the school and will try to save these resources.
- I will not attempt to bypass security systems.
- I will not harm or destroy data of another user or data that resides anywhere on the
school network or on the Internet.
- The supervising teacher/adult has the right to limit access.
- The use of individual accounts is at the discretion of the supervising teacher.
