Job Description

Special Education Paraprofessional

 

Qualifications: High School Graduate

 

Job Goal: The teaching assistant will provide support services to students at the direction of the teacher or case manager through one-to-one direct services or small group work within the classroom whenever possible.

 

Performance Responsibilities:

 

1.       To meet with case managers and teachers at the beginning of the school year and on a regular basis to:

a)      discuss specific responsibilities and expectations of the special education paraprofessional

b)      discuss upcoming classroom curriculum goals

c)      share knowledge of sensitive issues related to a student’s ability to perform in the classroom.

 

2.       To work individual with students within the classroom setting, or small group, at the direction of the teacher, with priority given to special education students to:

a)      reinforce content instruction

b)      reinforce directions

c)      modify curriculum as necessary for individual needs.

 

3.       To monitor and help implement Individual Education Plan (IEP) goals, objectives and classroom modifications in conjunction with teacher and case manager.  This may include correspondence in a home/school communication book.

 

4.       To report to the case manager and teacher regularly to discuss student progress and needs for program change based on informal observations and/or specific data collection.

 

5.       To support the social, emotional and behavioral development of special education students by the following:

a)      encouraging appropriate social integration

b)      fostering positive self-esteem in the student

c)      consistently enforcing the school-wide discipline policy and specific behavioral goals

d)      fostering independents.

 

6.       To act as a facilitator when students are completing assignments.

 

7.       To assist students in organizational and study skills such as note taking and recording and completing homework assignments.

 

8.       To provide special education students who are absent with makeup materials if necessary.

 

9.       Attend meetings such as to develop an Individual Education Plan (IEP), when necessary.

 

10.   To assume other duties and responsibilities assigned by principal and special education teacher such as bus and recess duties.
