POLICY STATEMENT

SUBSTITUTE PROFESSIONAL STAFF EMPLOYMENT

(Substitute Teachers)

The Superintendent shall maintain a list of qualified substitute teachers who may be called on to replace regular teachers who are absent. The list shall be filed with each principal. When principals call teachers whose names are on the substitute list insofar as possible they will call teachers for the subjects for which they are listed. Principals will be responsible for seeing that the work of the substitute is as effective as possible and will provide him/her with a planned program. Substitute teachers should familiarize themselves with the main requirements of the course of study. The Superintendent shall have full authority for placing the names of substitutes on the list.

ADMINISTRATIVE PROCEDURE

I. Selection of Substitutes

The Superintendent’s Office will advertise for substitute teachers and ascertain the continued interest of those who substituted the previous year. A comprehensive substitute list will be prepared and distributed to each principal by the Superintendent no later than August 31st.

II. Evaluation of Substitutes

A. The principal or designee will confer with the substitute in the classroom at least once during the first day of duty; and will hold additional conferences if the length of substitution is more than one day.

B. If the length of substitution extends beyond 10 consecutive days, the substitute will be evaluated in accordance with the existing evaluation system.

C. Principals will share information about substitutes at the monthly principals’ meetings.

III. Duties of Substitutes

The substitute will perform all of the duties that are assigned to the classroom teacher that he/she is replacing. These duties may include playground, lunchroom, detention hall supervision, etc. The substitute will follow the classroom teacher’s lesson plans.

IV. Remuneration

The daily rate of pay will be established by the Deerfield School Board for the ensuing year during each budget development cycle. When a substitute teacher is employed long-term, he/she will be placed onto the salary scale upon completion of twenty (20) consecutive school days of substitute employment.

V. Emergency Procedure

If the principal is unable to employ a substitute, the principal will use his/her discretion relative to providing proper supervision of the students. The principal will advise the Superintendent of the problem so that steps may be taken to find additional substitutes.
