CHICHESTER SCHOOL DISTRICT

Children With Different Talents Policy

The Chichester School District shall provide an Enrichment Program which recognizes and develops students’ differing and emerging strength, talents, and interests.  This program shall be an on-going process designed to identify and nurture each student’s potential and to respond to his/her unique characteristics and needs.  Rather than pulling out a small number of gifted students for special programming, this program will provide a variety of activities designed to enhance the self-concept of every student.  Such activities will be integrated into regular programming when possible, but may be scheduled after school hours.

An assembly program will provide exposure to speakers, the arts, crafts, sciences, theatre, and many performance areas.  Other challenge programs and enrichment activities might include:  Computer Club, Science Fair, Math Team, Artisans’ Day, Career Day, Christa McAuliffe Festival, Drama Club, Art Club, Advanced Placement English, and Social Studies, Ski Programs, Music Groups, Advanced Math/Algebra, Chess Club, Astronomy, Odyssey of the Mind, Book Club, Foreign Language Club, etc.

The Enrichment Program will provide students with opportunities both for observation and for active creativity.  Students will discover new interests and challenges, and will develop an awareness of the importance of achievement and task commitment.  Staff members will seek new methods of individualizing and enhancing classroom instruction.  Classroom teachers will become familiar with new strategies for bringing out students’ areas of strength and helping them to develop to their full potential.  The programs offered in a given year will vary depending on the interests of the student population, the expertise of the staff and parents/community volunteers, and availability of funding or other necessary resources.
