Policy on Bomb
Threats
In the event of a
call or notice to the effect that a bomb has been placed in a school building or
property, the following procedures are to be followed:
1.
Immediately after receiving
the phone call, the Principal shall be notified. The person receiving the call shall
write down the time of the call, what was said, and any other pertinent
information.
2.
After evaluation of the
circumstances, the decision regarding appropriate action will be made by the
Principal – with the overall safety of the students and staff being the
underlying basis for all decisions.
3. The Police and Fire Departments
shall be immediately notified.
4.
The building shall be
evacuated, following the guidelines and procedures distributed to the staff
(Code 1 = Fire Drill, Code 2 = Bomb Threat with prepared exit of Building, Code
Red = Exit Building Immediately).
5.
A search of the building and
premises shall be conducted under the direction of the senior officer present
from either protective department.
Administrators, custodians, and selected members of the staff shall
assist in the search.
6.
If a thorough search has
been conducted and nothing is found, the Principal shall be notified by the
senior officer present, and re-entry will be permitted at the discretion of the
Principal.
7.
The students shall not be
dismissed except in cases of extreme concern (severe weather, extended delay,
etc.). Any decision concerning
dismissal shall be made by the Principal or designee after consultation with the
Superintendent.
8.
Investigation of the
incident will be requested of the local police department assisted by the State
Police, if requested.
