Deerfield Community School - 8th Grade Math
The aim of this course is to develop the students's "math sense" by improving their comfort level with mathematical computation skills and thinking skills. I want students to become thinkers, and not simply symbol manipulators. We will cover a broad spectrum of math skills, and place an emphasis on problem solving. I also want students to realize that math is everywhere, and not a topic isolated in the math class. We will do a variety of projects throughout the year. Many of these projects will have an emphasis on connections to the student's lives and interests. We will be writing in math, this gives students another way of communication their understanding of many math topics.
In the year 2002-2003 we have upgraded our math program by offering geometry as a required integrated arts course. In this course, we will be exploring geometry through "Native American" constructions and computer explorations. In addition, we will be performing traditional geometric computations and discovering other geometric relationships
