Deerfield/Concord, New Hampshire, Monday, February 28, 1887

Weather:

Warmer, fair, northwesterly winds becoming variable

Saturday’s Blizzard- very severe winds and heavy snow in the northwest of the country. That was the worst storm recorded since 1871.
Savage Blizzard:

Windom, Minn.
- The people of Windom are in extreme danger of freezing to death. The blizzard brought lots of snow and they are in the need of fuel. Last heard there was two cars of wood but no coal at all. Family’s are in such need of fire wood, they are forced to burn fences, lumber piles, and anything else they can get their hands on.

They are currently snowed in from the large amount of snow from Saturday. Men are being put to work to shovel roads and train tracks. Trains aren’t expected to be arriving in Windom for a few days.
Train Burned

Les[sic], Cal.- A Railroad accident in California lead to several deaths. An East-bound and Pacific Railroad passenger train caught on fire. The engine or baggage areas are being believed to be the source of the fire. Soon after it started it spread to the mail carrier and passager car.
5 were found burned to death in the remains of the train. E.D. Gilbert, a brakeman, two Indians, and a trap were the lost in this tragedy. Very little cargo and mail was saved from the flames wrath.
Huge Lumber Fire

Lumber Fire, Hannibal, MO, 1887

Hannibal, MO
- 8 blocks of lumber was destroyed in Hannibal recently. Locals say it was the biggest fire they’ve ever seen. “It was one large ball of fire,” one local said. This was the most destructive fire ever recorded in Hannibal. A great sum of money was lost.
New York Pier 37 Fire

New York Pier Fire of 1887

New York, NY
- After 6 o’clock this morning a huge fire broke out, on Morgan Line Dock. The piers fire rapidly spread. The steamer Lone Star also encountered the flames. There is an estimate damage price of $100,000 just to the steamer alone.

The pier itself endured a great loss also. There is an estimate damage price of $100,000 to the pier. After the ashes and remains are cleaned up they will start the building of a new similar dock.

Also there was many bales of cotton being stored on the pier. There was an estimated 400 bales on the dock. Most of the cotton was lost in the fire. There is a suspected $150,000 worth of lost cotton. So the fire cost a lot, money wise.
Barr’s Burned

Springfield, MA.- At about 4:30 am at North Hampton a fire broke out. Two blocks were burned to the ground, which one of the blocks contained Barr’s restaurant. Much damage was reported, no exact sum has been released, also no further details at the time.
Town Meeting Topic

Hudson will consider many things this year for city for Concord. Hudson is taking into consideration the idea of organizing a town fire insurance company. Due to the high fire rate this is one thing the city of Concord needs.
Suicide

Boston - A guest of the Metropolitan Hotel, William A. Wikdol committed suicide last night. He used a strong drink on intentions of killing himself, and he succeeded in his own murder. Authority’s have gave no further info; look for an update later this week.

Researching what happened the day Martin VB Hill was born and the day he died was very hard and time consuming. In the end all the work paid off. I learned that around the day he died, there were a number of fires all over the country (I guess they didn’t have good fire fighting skills/prevention skills). I also learned how many people were born and died around the month he died. I ended up only researching the day he died because the day he was born (Feb. 25, 1844) was so long ago it is barely on any records, the only things I could find were birth and death dates and that didn’t help much. I think this research will help me in the future, meaning using all the different resources I learned how to use.
