6.         Special Topics

A.                 No Child Left Behind Law:  HQT Issues

The State of New Hampshire Department of Education has been notified that ALL teachers nationwide must meet the HQT requirement by June 2006.  For current elementary teachers, there is presently one option to demonstrate content knowledge, and that is to take a test.  Two tests are available:  (Praxis II #10014 or ABCTE test).  NHDE is developing a HOUSSE plan for experienced elementary teachers who may want to complete a portfolio.  All NH social studies teachers including special education teachers who provide direct instruction in the social studies curriculum and ESOL teachers who provide direct instruction in the social studies curriculum will need to address the content requirement for NCLB in each of the areas of social studies that the teacher teaches (history, geography, civics/government, and economics).  NH’s certified social studies teachers who have taken the Praxis II (#10081) have already demonstrated content knowledge through a multi-subject test.  Social studies teachers, who were certified in NH before 1999, were not required to pass the Praxis II test.  This group of social studies teachers may demonstrate content knowledge through the Praxis II (#10081) or through the social studies HOUSSE.
