Learning Circles

2006-2007 Learning Circle Accomplishments

Curriculum , Instruction, and Supports

  • Cheryl Jorgensen presented workshop on Instructional planning that aligns with gen ed standards and sped goals. There was a follow-up session for lesson planning using differentiated instruction
  • Ongoing training in curriculum based measures and goal development. Patty sent CBM task force to state trainings to learn how to use Curriculum Based Measures in reading, math, written expression, spelling, and executive functioning. Members included Vicki Therrien ( SAU) , Kathy Hering ( Hill /Village, Jan Santosuosso ( Epsom) , Kathy Whittaker ( Deerfield) , and Jane Heely & Lisa Clark from Chichester. Task force met this past summer to explore additional assessments for math and to plan for school CBM presentations
  • SAU wide easy IEP question and answer time that aligns IEP with standards. Patty organized trainings during Workshop days additional gain additional support on use of EASY IEP.

Effective data collection to show progress

  • Develop a district data team. The CBM task force is a data team that is available for general CBM overview and is also trained in using Aimsweb probes. They are available to do presentations to sped or to gen ed staff who are interested. They will also mentor others in using probes and scoring.
  • Curriculum Based Measurement state trainings :have SAU reps present ongoing workshops to each school to share information . v Consistent measurement instrument use for SAU/building
  • Make Curriculum Based Measure booklet to share with those interested. There are many CBM measures. Some schools are collecting them in binders. Vicki recently shared concept and application math probes for grades 2-6. AImsweb progress monitoring probes are available for those who have been trained in their use or who are being mentored by a CBM task force mentor or LAM ( Local AImsweb Manager).
  • SAU wide data collection norm- Anthony Blinn and principals of Allenstown are using Aimsweb benchmark for which is a data collection/assessment tool to record information from prek-8 general education student achievement . This can be used to record progress over time for special education students as well. The hope is for AImsweb to be used across district. Currently these schools have trained LAMS ( Local Aimsweb Managers) who can enter data, train staff, and set up access to progress monitoring and benchmarking of grade levels for schools. Once there are scores for 100 students at a grade level, there is enough data for SAU norm chart.

Collaboration

  • team collaboration in grading and doing report cards- Hill school made video Karen Medeiros shared grading protocol used at PA
  • training on meeting structures was modeled at Learning Circle meetings
  • Dramatization of real collaborative issues and reflective problem Solving Solving/ share templates strategies- Karen Medeiros showed reflective Practice video and shared what PA was doing with critical Friends Groups. Nancy Maquire shared how critical Friends works in Deerfield. Issa protocol was shared and modeled for the group to use in their schools.

How to be effective in making change?

  • Ongoing scheduled conversations between Sped and Regular ed happened at Cheryl Jorgensen Workshop where special education teachers, paras, and gen ed teachers discussed the law and need for differentiated instruction.
  • Collaborative team decision using case study to share with whole group was done at LC meeting
  • Learning circle meeting opened up time for sharing of resources and successful programs in our SAU

SAU Resource Center

  • 2 large bookcases have been built by PA woodshop students under the direction of Dave Ricard. Students have assembled them in the PA library.
  • Kathy Hering, Heather Worthen, Nancy Maquire met over the summer to plan for the organization of the Resource Center.
  • Kathy Hering continues to meet to help catalogue and stamp resource materials such as Books, Technology/AAC, Software, Curriculum units modified, Specialized programs
  • At the end of last year, a survey went out to ask for materials and specialized services
  • An email was sent out at close of school to solicit materials for the resource cente
  • Karen Medeiros has begun an adapted material making group in the Learning center at PA. Students have time cards to document community service hours. They are currently working on making 3D materials for a student who is visually impaired .

Para Initiatives completed

  • Compile consultant /presenter list so administration can have place to access ideas for workshop planning. These were distributed to all schools
  • Put Project PARA and other workshops on website
  • Para-teacher brochure was distributed to all schools
  • Para guideline checklist to determine need for students was developed
